From WWTDD:

Best Picture: "Atonement," "Juno," "Michael Clayton," "No Country for Old Men," "There Will Be Blood."

Actor: George Clooney, "Michael Clayton"; Daniel Day-Lewis, "There Will Be Blood"; Johnny Depp, "Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street"; Tommy Lee Jones, "In the Valley of Elah"; Viggo Mortensen, "Eastern Promises."

Actress: Cate Blanchett, "Elizabeth: The Golden Age"; Julie Christie, "Away From Her"; Marion Cotillard, "La Vie en Rose"; Laura Linney, "The Savages"; Ellen Page, "Juno."

Supporting Actor: Casey Affleck, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"; Javier Bardem, "No Country for Old Men"; Hal Holbrook, "Into the Wild"; Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Charlie Wilson's War"; Tom Wilkinson, "Michael Clayton."

Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett, "I'm Not There"; Ruby Dee, "American Gangster"; Saoirse Ronan, "Atonement"; Amy Ryan, "Gone Baby Gone"; Tilda Swinton, "Michael Clayton."

Director: Julian Schnabel, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"; Jason Reitman, "Juno"; Tony Gilroy, "Michael Clayton"; Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, "No Country for Old Men"; Paul Thomas Anderson, "There Will Be Blood."

I'd comment more on this now, but I have to go to work. I'm not surprised that Keri Russell's performance in Waitress wasn't recognised, but I am disappointed since it was much like Ellen Page's performance in Juno, only a bit better.

Juno for best picture? Are you fucking kidding?

Of all the people in that movie, she is the one nominated for an Oscar? Well, at least it's not Crowe.

I hope Cate Blanchett has someone accept her award on her behalf for I'm not there because she's not there.

Barely, and the more I hear of it the less awesome it gets, not that that has anything to do with anything, but im just saying you never see a best actor nom, Fransisoc Delerival, The Sands Of Nairobi.

How did Spidey 3 not get the effects nod? The birth of Sandman alone deserves one. I'm guessing they include car chases and other stunts as visual effects otherwise Bourne totally doesn't deserve it.

Skooch

The Bourne Ultimatum wasn't nominated in the Visual Effects category.

Ormie

Ok I don't know what the fuck I was googling then. Here's the nominees.

-The Golden Compass
-Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
-Transformers

Why is there only 3 instead of the regular 5? Put Spidey 3 in there.

I think Visual has to with puppets and such. Spidey seemed it was almost all Special. Pirates was chock full of puppetry and Transformers had some as well. But I don't know, I don't pick these things.

I don't remember any puppets in Pirates. It was overflowing with CG bullshit. but it might have been me just wanting to kill myself after 45 minutes of spinning around.

Does anyone have any opinions on what the best Best Picture winner ever is? I'm debating whether or not to run a Survivor-style poll thread.. but I don't know if the interest would be there.

Most people have seen a dozen just by accident.

Alright, since there are nearly 80 Best Picture winners now and I don't want this Survivor thing to take FOREVER, I don't think there's a need to include every past winner in the thing. I know I'm at risk of a :credloss: emoticon here, but really, are any of you going to be irate if 1931's Cimarron isn't included? I was tempted to just do the groupings as decades, but I'm guessing the 1930s - 60 ones won't get too much legit interest.

If people want every movie included, then I'll just either make random groupings or make the with a representative from each decade.

Too many or too few?

Big N Veiny
01-30-2008, 04:59 PM
Seems like a good number to me. On the list I was good going back until 1987 then it was a bit hit and miss, especially the 20s, 30s,40s and 50s unsurprisingly, where I had 4 in 4 decades . I didn't realise that many musicals had won best picture, I really hate musicals.

Envision
01-30-2008, 05:17 PM
Best picture is judged on its artsiness so if it is the worst movie ever (Crash) it'll still win best picture.

It was like $5.99 at Christmastime. Now I'm just annoyed that I bought it because it's the Fullscreen version. And now I'm not sure if there actually is a Widescreen version.

Ormie
02-10-2008, 03:34 AM
Speaking of, is Full Metal Jacket only in fullscreen? Because when I was looking for it all the torrents came up that way, but 1987 is a little recent for a film to not have widescreen.

Skooch
02-10-2008, 03:41 AM
There's a super doped-up edition that I've seen at work, and rarely are doped-up editions not Widescreen. If I remember I'll take a look and let you know.

Now that I've remembered that Platoon was a Kubrick movie, I remember why it was Fullscreen only for the longest time. Because Kubrick was an idiot and only released the films into the home viewing market in that format. To the best of my knowledge, it wasn't until last year that the widescreen versions became available.

PCC
