The regular season starts on Thursday, with an Original Six matchup between the Maple Leafs and Canadiens headlining the opening night. The Pittsburgh Penguins begin defense of their Stanley Cup on Friday night against the New York Rangers.

There's a number of new coaches, new GMs, and new players to watch and be entertained by. For some reason, The Hockey News has predicted the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup this season. That reason? Chris Pronger most likely.

Other THN Predictions (last year's result in brackets):

Western Conference
1. San Jose Sharks (1)
2. Chicago Blackhawks (4)
3. Vancouver Canucks (3)
4. Detroit Red Wings (2)
5. Calgary Flames (5)
6. Anaheim Ducks (8)
7. Dallas Stars (12)
8. Columbus Blue Jackets (7)
9. St. Louis Blues (6)
10. Nashville Predators (10)
11. Edmonton Oilers (11)
12. Los Angeles Kings (14)
13. Minnesota Wild (9)
14. Colorado Avalanche (15)
15. Phoenix Coyotes (13)

Eastern Conference
1. Boston Bruins (1)
2. Washington Capitals (2)
3. Pittsburgh Penguins (4)
4. Philadelphia Flyers (5)
5. New Jersey Devils (3)
6. Carolina Hurricanes (6)
7. Buffalo Sabres (10)
8. Montreal Canadiens (8)
9. Ottawa Senators (11)
10. Tampa Bay Lightning (14)
11. Toronto Maple Leafs (12)

Washington-Vancouver in the Finals. Caps win the Cup. Book it.

Paging Guapo to the NHL thread! I like his annual trashing of hockey.

Vancouver is not going to the Finals in the West.

Liked watching the Leafs outplay then lose.

Okay, as much as Bettman's NHL sucks (he's Cornell's biggest shame other than Ann Coulter, that serial killer who was executed in Connecticut, and Paul Wolfowitz), UAF hockey rocks!

Would, for example, Calgary have an interplanetary FLAME destroy Edmonton? The NHL is incapable of this kind of awesomeness!

Gotta love Kirk Maltby sniping shorthanded. So happy hockey is back.

Helluva game last night. Flames are firing on all cylinders, just need to play for more than 38 minutes and not abandon Kipper in the third.

Well, it's a step up from the whole "get outplayed and lose" strategy we've had for four years.

Is it? I would think expecting a loss and getting a loss is better than expecting a win and getting a loss.

Those retro uniforms were FREAKING AWESOME. I wish they'd make them the permanent uniforms again; not every team in the league needs black in their uniforms. I hate that 30th Anniversary patch though, as it's ugly and ruins the purity of the throwback.

Throwbacks need to go away and die for a bit, I think. OK, the Flames one did look pretty sick, but overall, it's just such overkill. Every sport, every week, someone's wearing retro uni's. It was kinda cool when it first started happening.

Living in the now is sometimes cool too.

Leafs to get demolished by Ovie and the Caps tonight as I celebrate my birthday. Terrific!

2 goals allowed in 2 games ain't a bad start at all. Brodeur seems to finally be showing his age, but maybe it was just a bad game. He allowed some pretty bad angle goals tonight.

Ehh, losing faith in Jimmy Howard. Also disappointed with the Wings defense. Love Leino though.

Went to Isles/Penguins last night. Saw a kid that looked lke Hamass dancing like a retard on the Jumbotron.

Tavares is the truth, son.

Sadly, though, I was missing the Rangers curbstomping Ottawa
