We're a couple weeks away from the release of Heavy Rain, a whodunit sleuther title in which you control four characters - an FBI Profiler, a retired private detective, a retired architect, and a sexy photo journalist. Check out some gameplay footage to see what it's all about:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-MOJJ5dLdk[/ame]

Now there are action sequences later in the game (they rely heavily on real-time button pressing - the triangle button will flash and you'll have to push it), but it seems the majority of the game moves at a slower pace and relies on mundane actions (in the above video, putting on makeup and unbuttoning your blouse, I've also seen teeth brushing and getting your son to do his homework). However, those who've played it praise the "detective" scenes, saying you feel like you're in an episode of Dexter unraveling clues about who the killer is.

This brings me to the debate I want to have - the tendency of games to become interactive movies. Gone are the days of jumping on Koopas and eating magical mushrooms to grow, nearly every game released today features cutscenes, voice acting, plot development and choices your character must make. It seems the video game industry, especially as graphics get better and better, gets closer and closer to making a video game that, well, feels more like a choose-your-own adventure novel than what we're used to.

What do you think about games turning into interactive movies? Is this an innovation for gaming, or an overpriced blu-ray?

I had the old Sega CD add-on for Genesis... so many of those games were basically just giant movies. Cool for a bit but gets tiresome quickly.

I do miss the simplier games... mainly because I'm a terrible video gamer and these games with 90 guys shooting at you just get too intense for my feeble brain.

Sega CD was different though - the technology wasn't good enough to truly encompass the feeling of a movie. Immersion is important in every movie, and the gameplay of Heavy Rain looks like some CGI magic was done, but at least you can immerse yourself in the story.

So it's an entire game of context sensitive controls? Doesn't sound too appealing.

It's hard to tell at this point. The action sequences are context-sensitive, but the rest of the game seems to be about solving mysteries and whatnot.

It supposedly adapts to the player, so no two playthroughs are the same. For example, if you fuck up and kill one of the four characters, the game continues with the other three solving it.

I don't know about this game suckaz, it looks like it might be one giant QTE. And QTE's are the worst shit in games at the moment.

They can be decent to make cutscenes more interesting or to break up repetative play but I'm skeptical about a whole game of them.

I remember the demo for some interactive movie game where you were FBI or something trying to find this nuke. It was cool but I don't think I'd like the whole game. That whole fad really died during the CD-ROM era and I honestly don't see it coming back.

First review is out, and it's good (99/100)

    http://www.nextgn.com/2010/02/09/heavy-rain-review/

Heavy Rain is the fresh mint this industry needed. We don´t need another first-person shooter, we need new creative and innovativeve games – that´s exactly what Heavy Rain is. It gave me my fix and restored my faith in gaming. Heavy Rain is definitely a strong contender for Game of the Year. It is one of the best games I have played and I will continue supporting David Cage and Quantic Dream with their new found gaming genre, Interactive Drama. This game is a must buy for everyone who owns, or knows someone that owns, a PlayStation 3.

I don't think games are really changing, developers are taking advantage of new developments. Will still have the jumping and magic mushrooms, but other games that suit it will move into the realm of reacting to your every move and responding rather then a certain decision sending you down a certain story path.

Heavy Rain I'm excited about, despite not having a PS3. Games like this are cause for support as they're really trying something different. One of the trends now I think is that due to the large budgets games require, often there's little innovation that takes place. Developers play it safe and while the games can be great, there usually based on previous successful formulas and simply expand on previous successful game play.

Ormberg with the uninformed cynical outlook on things as usual.

Not that I'm really excited for this game, but I know people that are.

Even with all the QTE in the apartment fight?

I liked the way it worked. You hit the button, you hit your opponent. You miss the button, your opponent hits you. The fight evolves depending on what you do. Awesome.
